The Cold War (1947–1991) was a relentless global struggle for dominance between two nuclear-armed superpowers: the capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union.
It was dubbed “cold” because the two rivals never clashed in direct, all-out military combat, fearing that a massive nuclear exchange would lead to total global annihilation. Instead, they competed through intense political maneuvering, massive espionage networks, a tense nuclear arms race, and the space race. They also fought indirectly through bitter proxy wars in regions like Korea and Vietnam.
The high-stakes conflict effectively split the world into opposing ideological blocs. It finally concluded in 1991 when severe economic strain, intense civil unrest, and sweeping political reforms led to the total collapse of the Soviet Union.
